Wood Industry Skills Development Centre (WISDEC)

Wood-based industry is one of Malaysia's leading industry sources. These resources play an important role in Malaysia's industrialization program and the government has identified that potential timber industry stepped forward as one of the main sources of income for the country. The main development objective of the Industrial Master Plan (IMP) is:
  • to change the wood-based industry to a major resource-based industries.
  • to maximize the value-added products from forest resources.
  • to establish Malaysia's reputation as a center for high quality wood products such as joinery, furniture and moldings.
Therefore, the development of human resources plays an important role in efforts to improve the skills of workers in the timber sector in addition to increasing the production and productivity of an organization. IMP also of the opinion that the lack of skilled and experienced workforce is one of the critical factors that hinder technology transfer in generating new technologies. In this regard, the Government of Malaysia under the Sixth Malaysia Plan (1991-1995) established the Wood Industry Skills Development Centre (WISDEC). Funding for these projects was channeled to the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) specifically to train skilled workers in the wood-based industry.

Therefore, WISDEC been tasked to train a group of skilled workers and skilled and able to meet the needs of the industry. WISDEC also mandated with the responsibility to carry out technical training; assist in product development; organizing furniture designs; well as coordinating Malaysia Skills Competition (CPM). In carrying out these activities, WISDEC has been working closely with relevant organizations such as universities, as well as other ministries and training centers.
