Peninsular Malaysia Timber Legality Assurance System (MyTLAS)

TIMBER LEGALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEM PENINSULAR MALAYSIA (MYTLAS)

Legality and certification are global requirements that need to be addressed, especially to ensure that the country's timber industry continues to remain sustainable and competitive in the international market. Peninsular Malaysia's timber product legality system was initially implemented in accordance with the Timber Regulations as a consequence of talks with the EU on the basis of the Forest Law, Enforcement, Governance, and Voluntary Trade Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA) (EUTR).

MyTLAS is an initiative whose credibility must be strengthened and whose scope must be widened in order to ensure that the country's timber supply maintains its position on the international level and that the export value of timber products continues to increase.

Compliance with legality criteria along the supply chain is important to make sure that forest and plantation goods can continue to be used as the country's natural (renewable) resources and for international trade.

Since 2012, MTIB has been developing MyTLAS, and the issuance of MyTLAS Certificates for export to European Union (EU) countries began on February 1, 2013. During this time, MyTLAS has undergone a consolidation phase characterised by activities like third-party compliance audits, capacity building, and the evolution of change based on changes in the modern timber trade. The issuance of MyTLAS Certificates has been expanded to the entire export market as of January 1, 2022. Peninsular Malaysia made MyTLAS, which is a system for checking the legality of wood based on six (6) principles and twenty-four (24) tables (criteria).
