STANDARD NAME TAMPOI (Medium Hardwood) FAMILY Euphorbiaceae BOTANICAL NAME Baccaurea spp. DISTRIBUTION Found in the lowlands and in swamp forests. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The sapwood is not differentiated by colour from the heartwood, which is light yellowbrown, and darkening to brown with a purple-red or orange-yellow tinge.

Grain is straight of shallowly interlocked.

Texture is moderately fine but uneven due to the presence of the large rays.

Vessels are moderately small to just medium-sized, angular, solitary and in radial groups of two to four.

Wood parenchyma is abundant, as apotracheal bands.

Rays are of two distinct sizes, medium-sized and very fine; medium-sized rays distinct to the naked eye on all surfaces.

USES
Used for house construction and is also suitable for ornamental turnery.
