Introduction
The timber industry is an important resource-based industry in Malaysia and continues to play an important role in its socio-economic development. In 2006, the export of timber and timber products totalled RM 23.4 billion, registering a 10.4% increase over 2005. Of the total, furniture constituted over RM 7 billion worth of exports in the year.
With the acceleration in globalization, coupled with integration of markets, harmonization of standards are taking centre stage. Therefore, standardization activities undertaken regionally and internationally will enhance competitiveness in the timber industry.
Today, the ability to comply with change to standards, regulations and codes is important to ensure market access. Timely updates on all the key changes and proposals will enable the industry to make the most of opportunities.
