:: Seminar
on Research & Industry Trends ::
24
February 2005 (Thursday)
MTIB Conference Hall, Kuala Lumpur
The
timber industry is an important resource-based industry in Malaysia and
continues to play an important role in its socio-economic development.
The performance and contribution of the wood-based industry to the Malaysian
economy is commendable. In 2004, the export of timber and timber products
is expected to reach RM 19 billion. The furniture sector which has been
the star performer of the timber industry for the past decade is expected
to rake in RM 5.3 billion in 2004.
Currrently, the industry contributes about 5% to the Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) and provides employment opportunities to about 337,700 persons.
The timber industry, which has traditionally been dominated by the primary
processing sectors, producing sawntimber, plywood and veneer has since
expanded towards the manufacture of higher value-added products such as
mouldings, joinery and furniture to meet the global demand. This is in
line with the objective of the First and Second Industrial Master Plans
which emphasise further industrialisation through the development of downstream
value-added products. With the onslaught of globalisation and trade liberalisation,
it is imperative for the timber industry to keep abreast of current developments
that are likely to affect the industry.
