Grading Rules
Export of
graded sawn timber must conform with the Malaysian Grading Rules for Sawn
Hardwood (MGR) issued by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board, which is
the Grading Authority in Malaysia. Supplementary rulings such as Timber
Export Bulletins (TEBs), Grading Instructions (Gls) and MGR Supplements
lend greater clarity to the MGR.Three basic systems of grading timber
are embodied in the MGR. These are the Cutting System, Defect System and
Stress Grading.
Specifications
Under The MGR
A) General Market Specifications
(GMS)
GMS
is employed for grading timber which are usually resawn before use. There
are six grades, each determined by the Cutting System. Prime Sound Select

B) Special Market Specifications (SMS)
SMS is employed for grading timber which
will be used for specific purposes, usually in the exact sizes in which
they are supplied. The grades for these specifications are generally determined
under the Defect System.
The specific purposes for which rules are
at present provided are as follows:
Prime Wides and Panel
For
grading wide widths or for grading "better face clear" timber.
Strips
For grading narrow widths of below 6" wides and less than 2"
in thickness.
Shorts
For grading short lengths of any size, usually of less than 6 feet long.
Cross Arms
For grading cross arms for carrying telephone wires or electric power
lines.
Wagon Planks
For grading planks and scantlings for construction and repair of railway
goods and other wagons.
Railway Sleepers and Crossings
For grading sawn railway sleepers, railway bridge sleepers and crossing
sleepers.
Scantlings
For grading scantlings for general use of which the thickness equals or
exceeds half its width.
Large Scantlings and Squares
For grading sawn timber 60 sq. inches and above in cross-sectional area
for general construction work which are usually used in the size supplied
and not intended for re-sawing to smaller cross sections.
Decks
For grading sawn timber for ship decking only including margins.
Stress Grading
For grading timber required for structural members.
