STANDARD NAME

MERPAUH

(Medium Hardwood)

Family

Anacardiaceae

BOTANICAL NAME

Swintonia spp.

DISTRIBUTION

Widely distributed from lowlands to mountain forests.

GENERAL DISCRIPTION

The sapwood is light brown with a grey or pink tinge and is not well-defined from the heartwood, which is light grey-brown with a pink tinge. Some trees develop a core wood which is streaked with orange and red lines.

Grain is interlocked.

Texture is moderately coarse and even.

Growth rings are fairly distinct.

Vessels are with simple perforations, medium-sized or moderately large, generally few, rarely moderately few, as solitary and in radial pairs and multiples of three to seven in a series; evenly distributed without any arrangement. Tyloses are often present but not well developed.

Wood parenchyma is both apotracheal, as irregularly spaced concentric bands, and paratracheal, as narrow incomplete borders to the vessels.

Rays are very fine and not visible to the naked eye, except for occasional medium-sized rays containing horizontal canals. The horizontal intercellular canals are characteristic.

USES

Suitable for medium and light construction, tansmissions posts, railway sleepers, high class joinery and furniture, panelling, partitioning, flooring, boat construction and plywood.
