(Light Hardwood)

Family

Dipterocarpaceae

BOTANICAL NAME

Parashorea spp. (Light species)

DISTRIBUTION

Found widely in lowland forests as well as lowlying ground subject to occasional inundation in Sabah and Sarawak.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sapwood is paler in colour and not clearly defined from the heartwood, which is pinkish cream when fresh, turning to straw colour or light brown on exposure.

Grain interlocked.

Texture is moderately coarse and even.

Vessels are diffuse, almost entirely solitary, though occasional radial and oblique pairs and radial groups of up to three occur. Tyloses are present and sometimes abundant. Perforation plates are simple.

Wood parenchyma is moderately abundant to sparse. Apotracheal parenchyma is diffuse, occurring as occasional short fine lines, enclosing the resin canals and connecting them tangentially. Paratracheal parenchyma consists of narrow to wide vasicentric sheaths, frequently aliform and occasionally confluent.

Rays are medium-sized.

Vertical intercellular canals are smaller than the vessels, filled with white resin and arranged in long tangential series.

USES

Used for interior finishing, joinery, cladding, shuttering, panelling, partitioning, plywood, furniture and mouldings.
