BOTANICAL NAME

Casuarina spp. and Gymnostoma spp.

DISTRIBUTION

Widely distubuted in sandy sea beaches often cultivated for ornament.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The sapwood is lighter in colour and distinct from the heartwood, which is pink-brown, redbrown or dark brown.

Texture is coarse and uneven.

Grain is straight, slightly interlocked or wavy.

Growth rings are indistinct.

Vessels are medium sized to moderately large, mostly solitary, but with a tendency to radial or oblique arrangement, often containing brown to red-brown gum-like substances, occasionally with chalky white deposits.

Wood parenchyma is abundant, paratracheal vasicentric and apotracheal in regular, wavy, narrow bands, rarely diffuse.

Rays are extremely fine or very fine.

Ripple marks are absent.

USES

The wood is suitable for tool handles, fence posts, light construction and piling. In Peninsular Malaysia, the Malays use a decoction of the twigs as a lotion to soothe swelling. The powdered bark is used to treat pimples.
