STANDARD NAME

PUNAH

(Medium Hardwood)

Family

Tetrameristaceae

BOTANICAL NAME

Tetramerista glabra

DISTRIBUTION

Common in swamp forests.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The sapwood is lighter coloured but not always sharply defined. The heartwood is pinkbrown weathering to a light brown.

Grain is straight, interlocked or sometimes spiral.

Texture is moderately coarse and even.

Vessels are with simple perforations, moderately large, moderately few in number, very few solitary, the others in radial pairs and multiples of up to six or more; unevenly distributed. Tyloses are present but sparse. Deposits are common.

Wood parenchyma is of the apotracheal type, diffused or often in short tangential lines, bridging rays.

Rays are of two distinct sizes, the broad rays being very prominent on the radial surface, causing a slight silver figure.

 USES

Suitable for heavy construction, posts, beams, joists, rafters, door and window frames, heavy-duty flooring and furniture, railway sleepers and transmission posts.
