(Medium Hardwood)

(Also known as Minyak Berok in Penisular Malaysia and Sabah)

Family

Polygalaceae

BOTANICAL NAME

Xanthophyllum spp.

DISTRIBUTION

Found growing in the lowland and hill forests.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The sapwood is not differentiated from the heartwood, which is white to bright yellow when fresh and darkens on exposure to a strong orange-yellow.

Grain is straight.

Texture is moderately coarse and uneven.

Growth rings are present but hard to discern, demarcated by bands of fibres without wood parenchyma.

Vessels are few, medium-sized to large, mostly large and exclusively solitary with a strong tendency to be arranged tangentially; tyloses are absent but dark coloured gum-like deposits are occasionally present.

Wood parenchyma is abundant, both paratracheal and apotracheal types are present. Paratracheal type occurs as vasicentric, aliform and confluent bands; apotracheal parenchyma consists of narrow and irregularly spaced bands which are frequently interrupted.

Rays are very fine, not visible to the naked eye.

USES

Suitable for medium construction, railway sleepers, transmission posts, interior works, panelling, parquet flooring, planking, pallets and plywood.
