DISTRIBUTION

Occurs naturally in swamp forests between the old raised sea beaches, and is characteristic feature of the deep seasonal swamps of the coastal alluvial flats behind the sandy beaches and the mangroves.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The sapwood is light pink-brown and is not sharply differentiated from the heartwood, which is almost similar in colour to the sapwood but of a slightly darker shade.

Grain is straight or shallowly interlocked.

Texture rather fine and even.

Growth rings are distinct to indistinct boundaries by layers of denser fibre and fewer vessels.

Vessels are of variable size from small to medium; solitary, sometimes in radial pairs, occasionally in vague tangential arrangement; gummy deposits are present, tyloses are absent.

Wood parenchyma is moderately abundant, apotracheal diffuse tending to local aggregation, paratracheal scanty with tendency to aliform, indistinct even to lens.

Rays are moderately fine, not visible to naked eye.

Ripple marks are absent.

USES

Its resistant to marine borer attack making it great for salt-water piling. Also suitable for house posts, furniture parts, pallets, crates and boxes.
