Roadmap Pembangunan Industri Perabot Kayu Negeri Johor

The wooden furniture industry is very important to the state of Johor. In 2014, the export value for Malaysian wooden furniture totaled at RM6.4 bilion. From this total, the state of Johor was the main contributor of about RM3.61 bilion or 56.8%. This was an increase from RM2.5 bilion (43.8%) in 2013.

Riding on this positive development, “Roadmap Pembangunan Industri Perabot Kayu Negeri Johor”, which was developed by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board in collaboration with the Johor State Government and Muar Furniture Association was launched by YAB Dato’ Khaled Bin Nordin, the Minister of Johor in conjunction with Johor Wood & Lifestyle Fair on 11 August 2016 at Galeri Glulam MTIB, Johor.

The Roadmap for the Development of Johor’s Wood Furniture Industry had laid out five (5) strategic thrust which are as follows; solution to the labour shortage, the relocation of the furniture industry, the development of entrepreneurs, branding and promotion for the furniture industry. The strategies lay out in this book would take five years to be implemented, from 2015 until 2020.

This Roadmap had taken into account all relevant issues that had the potential affects the development of the industry and had outlined steps that would become the reference points for all wooden furniture entrepreneurs in Johor. Amongst those issues are shortage of labor, unlicensed factories, lack of raw materials and business development.

Numerous efforts had and will be carried out by the federal government such as MTIB, which is the agency under the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities which are tasked to strengthen Johor’s furniture industry. Among the activities currently in progress is the development of Muar furniture hub in Muar Timber Industry Park (MTIP), encouraging local to join the industry through career carnival and the increase of productivity and promote quality factory environment through Lean Manufacturing and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) – 5S.

Therefore, it is with great hope that all relevant parties will benefited from all strategies being outlined in this book. This will encourage growth for the nation’s timber industry namely Johor.
