Manufacturing & Design

The Malaysian timber industry is one of the major contributors to the economic growth in Malaysia. The industry has also successfully place Malaysia as a major supply of quality timber and timber products to the world market. Beside exports markets, the domestic market is also an important contributor to the Malaysian economy. The National Timber Industry Policy (NATIP) which was launched in 2009, has provided a strategic and comprehensive plan to further strengthen the development of timber based industries in Malaysia. However, one of the major challengers facing by the industry is the depleting of raw materials for local processing industry.

Therefore, the timber industry which has been a major source of export income for the country for the last 40 years, are encouraged to innovate and re-invent in order to remain competitive in the domestics as well as international markets. The invention of innovative product called laminated veneer lumber or LVL through a process of laminating veneers with the greatest advances in adhesives technology is one of the options to be further explored by the timber industry. This book was created in response to research gathered by the authors through focus group meetings with researchers, engineers, architects, fabricators, construction managers as well as contractors throughout Malaysia. One of the findings of these focus groups was that architects and designers were eager for more technical information and knowledge of how to incorporate LVL into building. In response to this need, Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) together with University Putra Malaysia (UPM) and University Technology MARA (UiTM) set out to create this book that would provide an understanding of the structural systems, material properties as well as design details for LVL. To that end industry experts from all fields; architects, engineers, fabricators and timber specialists were assembled to provide the most up-to-date accurate information on manufacturing and designing in LVL.

LVL, which looks like plywood, is made from thin veneers that are glued together. The grain in every veneer runs in the same direction, making it strong enough to span great expanses. LVL provides a versatile lumber product, which can be produced in an extensive range of dimension and strength to meet technical and dimensional specification in construction especially the fabrications of beams and roof trusses. Architect can draw some creative components/members where the spans can go up to 45 feet; before they have the idea what material could be used. However when it comes to material selection, limited knowledge on the properties of different materials would have restricted the imaginary of an architect. Therefore, Laminated Veneer Lumber from Malaysia Tropical Timber (Manufacturing and Design) could be a great guideline for architects, designers and engineers on how to incorporate LVL in their structural innovative designs. This book also covers the fundamentals and presents the design guidelines in a most logical and clear manner for engineering students to follow. Besides, it is also comprehensive reference for the practitioners to use in their design. This book is a milestone, which will facilitate excellent transfer of technology and will help to accelerate the progress and advancement in the field.
