At the 13th Meeting of the
Conference of Parties, CITES , it was agreed by all Parties that Ramin (Gonystylus
spp.) be uplisted from Appendix III to Appendix II and Gaharu/Karas (Aquilaria
spp./Gyrinops spp) be listed in Appendix II. In this regard, Malaysia as
one of the range states is taking action to implement the conditions associated
with the trade in Appendix II species. This includes the issuance of CITES
export and import permits, and re-export certificates by the related Management
Authority (M.A.), and producing non-detrimental findings by the relevant
agencies to assist the Scientific Authority in determining whether the export
of a species will not be detrimental to the survival of that species. If
it is so, then an export quota would be imposed for that species.
MTIB is the M.A. for timber
and timber products in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. The implementation
of Appendix II, CITES for Ramin and Gaharu/Karas takes effect as of 12
January 2005.
