Wood-based industry is one of Malaysia's leading industry sources. These resources play an important role in Malaysia's industrialization program and the government has identified that potential timber industry stepped forward as one of the main sources of income for the country. The main development objective of the Industrial Master Plan (IMP) is:
Therefore, the development of human resources plays an important role in efforts to improve the skills of workers in the timber sector in addition to increasing the production and productivity of an organization. IMP also of the opinion that the lack of skilled and experienced workforce is one of the critical factors that hinder technology transfer in generating new technologies. In this regard, the Government of Malaysia under the Sixth Malaysia Plan (1991 - 1995) established the Wood Industry Skills Development Centre (WISDEC). Funding for these projects was channeled to the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) specifically to train skilled workers in the wood-based industry. Therefore, WISDEC been tasked to train a group of skilled workers and skilled and able to meet the needs of the industry. WISDEC also mandated with the responsibility to carry out technical training; assist in product development; organizing furniture designs; well as coordinating Malaysia Skills Competition (CPM). In carrying out these activities, WISDEC has been working closely with relevant organizations such as universities, as well as other ministries and training centers.
INTRODUCTION
Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) is a federal statutory body responsible for the development of the timber industry of the country. In carrying out these responsibilities, MTIB took into account the human resource development as one of the critical elements that need to be addressed, so that the timber industry to enhance productivity, efficiency, quality, and have a value-added product. Therefore, to carry out their roles more effectively, then MTIB has established Wood Industry Skills Development Centre or Wood Industry Skills Development Centre (WISDEC) in Banting, Selangor in 1995 and another in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in 2005. WISDEC establishment is consistent with our objective to accelerate the transfer of technology and the processing of value-added wood products such as furniture, joinery and moldings. WISDEC main objective is:
MISSION
“To enhance the development of human resources in the timber industry, with particular emphasis on downstream processing to increase its productivity and competitiveness”
Vision
“ To be the leading instituition for industrial training and provision of technical advisory services on downstream timber processing”
